Since the beginning of the 80’s an ambitious team from the Institute of Computing Science of Poznań University of Technology has led the computing and networking research. Then an idea of common infrastructure for the whole Poznań society has arisen, elaborated by the Institute. As the result, in 1993 new supercomputing and networking center supporting local academic society was established.

In 1994 the High Performance Computing centre was opened and only one year later PSNC appeared on the prestige TOP500 list. Because of growing demand for high performance computers PSNC has undertook research on supercomputers’ cluster and a metacomputer connecting distributed resources. 

In 1993 we started our work in the group of 6 people, within the fields of networks, network services and supercomputing centre. Recently the amount of people working for PSNC grew up to 252, all employed in the 6 following departments:

„In 1993 City of Poznań Chancellors’ Board set up the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center affiliated to the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The main goal was to develop scientific IT infrastructure in the region.

As the research centre for e-Infrastructure PSNC designed and built Metropolitan Network POZMAN, High Performance Computing Center and national broadband network PIONIER (previously known as POL-34), maintained and still being improved by the Center. PSNC  is also a reputable research and development centre specialized in new generation networks, grids, digital libraries, new media, cyber security standards, as well as technologies, applications and services for information society.

Since 2001 PSNC has been actively involved in European research and development projects, especially in Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Framework Programme.

PSNC represents Poland in numerous organizations and societies, such as Terena and Ripe NCC and is a partner in such initiatives as GÉANT and Internet2."
