Experiments in live social and networked media experiences

EXPERIMEDIA (Experiments in live social and networked media experiences) is a FIRE (Future Internet Research and Experimentation) project financed by the Seventh Framework. The goal of the project is to deliver a platform for R&D and evaluation of innovative products and services from the FMI (Future Media Internet) domain. The platform consists of integrated technologies from the areas of new generation networks, social networks and media, running in venues taking part in the project:

  • Schladming Ski Resort - Austria
  • Multi-Sport High Performance Center of Catalonia CAR (Centre d'Alt Rendiment) - Spain
  • Foundation of the Hellenic World – Greece
  • 3D Innovation Living Lab - France

Those infrastructures will host experiments researching new forms of user interaction in real and virtual communities. Every experiment will be run in a chosen venue where everyday users will evaluate the innovative multimedia and network technologies. The goal of the experiments is also to offer solutions that can be used in the institutions and increase the standard of services they offer.

PSNC’s experiment within the EXPERIMEDIA project will research the CONFetti system, which is the effect of a cooperation between the Applications, Network and Network Services departments. This system offers the possibility of holding High Definition (HD) stereoscopic (3D) videoconferences enriched with augmented reality functionality realised through superimposing animated 3D models onto one of the video feeds. The CONFetti experiment will evaluate the system’s usefulness in a remote training scenario in the CAR sports centre. The coach, located outside the centre, will connect with the on-site athletes through a videoconference.

 

 

 

 

 

 

He will have access to recordings of previous training sessions (for example of athletes performing a gymnastics routine) registered and provided using the venue’s technical infrastructure and EXPERIMEDIA’s components. During the videoconference 3D models the athlete’s bodies will be superimposed onto those recordings giving the coach the possibility to precisely analyse the performance of his protégés and give them valuable advice. This technology will increase the availability and convenience of training thanks to the possibility of holding remote sessions. Furthermore, the effectiveness of knowledge transfer should rise thanks to the use of training aids in the form of archival recordings and 3D models. The experiment will prove the system’s usefulness in training scenarios and be an opportunity for further integration of its components developed by different departments of PSNC.

One of the highlights of the VISIONAIR Open Forum conference (5-6.02.2014) will be the presentation of the CONFetti platform which was created within the EXPERIMEDIA project. The event will include a demonstration of CONFetti's usefulness in the process of preparing choreographies and training of dancers.
