Coordinating European Future Internet Research
Significant resources are being deployed in research at the European and Member State (MS) levels to bolster Europe’s position as the global leader in Future Internet (FI) research. ceFIMS-CONNECT addresses the need for closer integration and coordination of ICT research and innovation among Member States and between Member States and the EU.
The project will support the European network of National Future Internet Forum (FIF) to facilitate the sharing of best practices at European, National and Regional levels, identify and monitor the progress of European and National FI initiatives and categorize potential cooperation opportunities and support the targeted uptake of FI research results, including the promotion of FI-PPP among Member States and the use of FI-PPP Generic Enablers.
The ceFIMS CONNECT (full name: “Coordination of European Future Internet Forum of Member States & the Collection and Sharing of Research Data to Enhance & Promote National Cooperation”) Coordination Action project was initiated in March 2014 within the European Commission Framework Programme’s Objective ICT-2013.1.7 Future Internet Research and Experimentation (FIRE).
The consortium consists of four partners being members of FIF: Waterford Institute of Technology (Ireland) – the coordinator of the project, Fundaçao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia (Portugal), Asociación de Empresas de Electrónica, Tecnologías de la Información, Telecomunicaciones y Contenidos Digitales (Spain) and Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (Poland).
Scheduled finish date: 2016-08-31
here is a strong consensus that this should continue in order to maintain the fostering of European competitiveness in this strategic area. However, a lack of coordination between Member States and EU initiatives (incl. Framework Programme and FI-PPP) has resulted in duplication and fragmentation of research resources. ceFIMS-CONNECT will address this problem by facilitating and supporting closer integration and coordination between Member States and the EU in FI initiatives, experimental-based research and large-scale deployment activities. ceFIMS-CONNECT will leverage its knowledge of Member State and EU-funded research and experimental facilities to maximize engagement, coordination and integration of Future Internet stakeholders. ceFIMS-CONNECT will support the sharing of best practices, solutions, applications and services, and promote the wider uptake of European Future Internet results by lead users (in particular, European SMEs).
THe main objectives of the ceFIMS-CONNECT project are:
• Support the European Future Internet Forum (FIF)1 by providing a Secretariat and supporting the activities of the FIF in the process of transition into Horizon 2020 and the new 5G PPP
• Support Member State and Associate State Future Internet initiatives and the National FI Chapters.
• Facilitate the collection and sharing of information on Member State and Associate State FI initiatives, strategies and priorities by establishing mechanisms for exchange of experiences, best practices and for identifying common challenges and cooperation opportunities.
• Undertake targeted dissemination activities to Member States and Associated States.
