PRACE

The PRACE project is aimed at designing services and computing infrastructure for High Performance Computing tasks. The infrastructure will be managed as a single, coherent – European – organism. A legal organizational structure will be defined and created, which will involve computing centers, budgetary agencies and research user communities.
The Polish research and technology environment will have access to cutting edge computing systems, providing comparable or even more possibilities than those currently available in the USA and Japan. Services will be delivered by five leading computing centers in Europe closely supported by regional and national centers. In coordination with new grid technologies, it will create a unique, pan-European structure of the HPC ecosystem.
The petaflop infrastructure will be backed by grid type mechanisms and network as well as required application providing services. This leads to reinforcement of the professional knowledge concerning parallel applications, libraries and data storage in large scale systems.
Partners will cooperate with the European IT industry on the development of recent technologies and architecture components that are promising for petaflop systems after 2010 (1000 teraflop/second). The pan-European HPC service will be a part of the ERA (European Research Area), in which the 7 Framework Program is ready to invest a few hundred million euro.
